SC Workshop {The Snapshots}

{food shots from the workshop can be seen here and here}

My first instinct here is to be incredibly effusive. I feel pretty schmaltzy about my 4 day workshop in South Carolina. But it is hard to really describe a weekend away doing nothing but the thing you love, while at the same time meeting people awesome enough that you hope to still call them friends decades from now.

Going into this I was familiar with the talent of our instructors because I have followed their work for years and am so inspired by their style. What I didn’t know was just how lovely they would be in person. In addition to all the direction and instruction on food photography, they were always on hand to guide and critique and encourage. At one point during a shoot I felt stuck and was second guessing my styling decisions and the lovely Clare came to my rescue. We talked it through. We put stuff in, took stuff out. We edited the shot until it felt right. Having her beside me helped me work through my edit and feel so much more confident about the styling process.

On the last day as we were all pulling together our final shots, I listened as Helene sat with one of the other attendees and went through her shots and the feedback she gave on each image was incredible.

But just as much learning and sharing was happening amongst the attendees and I am so grateful this was a generous group of women eager to improve their work. Everything from camera settings, to equipment, to post processing was discussed and shared as we all worked on shoots and processed images. It was my kind of heaven.

I am so inspired by the work of my fellow attendees and I hope to shoot with you again soon!!

Here are some casual snapshots of all of us from the weekend…..

As we were walking back from having a drink in town, this orange pick-up pulled over to the side of the road really quickly. This young man jumps out and runs over to a grouping of pink flowers and before we know it we realize he is picking a flower for his girlfriend in the passenger seat of the cab. I only got this one shot and it’s not great but it was SOOOOO cute!

And there we all are!

Channeling the Kids {food photography}

It isn’t often I have a chance to get away by myself and relax. And it is almost NEVER that I get a way by myself to do some professional development.

Last Tuesday bright and early, my amazing husband and three children dropped me off at the airport for a 7 day trip to visit family and head to a food photography workshop. I got to spend time with loved ones I never see and work with photographers I truly admire and cherish. I have loved every minute of my time away.

however……

By Sunday I was missing my kids like crazy and while I still had to focus on my work, they kept creeping into my head. Wondering whether my daughter had fun painting her first stage set or if my son enjoyed visiting day at his new summer camp. When our instructors told us we needed to make and style a picnic lunch for a beach shoot all I could think of was what I would make for my kids. While everyone else is thinking about how great tomatoes, sprouts, or salads would look in a shot, I was thinking cookies and fruit skewers. Because I could barely think about anything else by Sunday.

The way the shoots worked at this retreat was this…. Chef Laura, our kitchen manager for the workshop, and our two instructors, Helene and Clare, would lay out all the food options for the shoot – and they were many. We’re talking homemade jams, salted caramel, gorgeous quinoa salads, squash blossom quiche – the works. And on Sunday while everyone was heading to the kitchen island to make colorful sandwiches or scoop glistening salads into bowls, I headed for the pantry to grab the jam, the fridge for the cream cheese, and to the fruit bowl for a ripe banana. The last instruction for the Sunday shoot was this…..

“You must only make what you intend to eat for lunch.”

So after my shoot, I filled up on my cream cheese and jam and banana sandwich along with fruit skewers, cookies, and chips. Kids, this shoot was for you – I miss you and can’t wait to hug you tonight!

love,

Mom

Charleston, SC Food Photography Workshop

If you know me personally, you’ve been hearing me blather on about this cool photography workshop I would be attending in May. Last November I got totally lucky to get a spot in a 12 person food photography workshop with Clare Barboza and Helene Dujardin. Both amazing photographers whose work makes me drool!

Then, at the end of March I broke my foot and instantly feared I might not be able to attend the workshop. A huge thank you goes out to my family who nursed me back to health and allowed me full control of the TV remote while I kept my foot up and overdosed on calcium and vitamin D.

The workshop has been way more than I ever expected. Alongside incredible instruction from Clare and Helene, I am also surrounded by wonderful women who share the same passion for photography. Quite a treat, let me tell you. Talking photog shop all day long with people who never tire of it….HEAVEN!

So far we have had five shoots with another planned for today. We’ve made breakfast and shot it. We went to a Charleston farmer’s market and shot there. And last night we got to eat at Helene’s favorite Charleston restaurant, Lana. And wow! That was awesome!!!

Here is a little bit of what I’ve done…

Pickwick sweeps the night

As you have probably already noticed here, I am a very lucky woman to be friends with and photographer for Miss Ali of the Pickwick Baking Co. Her sweets are out of this world and my favorite favorite item of hers is the Macaron. Ze French Macaron. A sandwich cookie made with almond paste and meringue and filled with all sorts of fruity creamy concoctions. They are all the rage not only in Paris but on this side of the Atlantic as well. Macaron fever is sweeping the world and home bakers and professional pastry chefs alike are having a go. They are a tricky little sucker though. You have to get them just right, well, to be just right. They should be moist but not too sticky. They should have a smooth hard outer shell that is neither cracked, bumpy or browned.  Pickwick’s Macaron is perfect and wildly delicious. They can be flavored and colored with nearly anything, which makes them such a fun way to express yourself in the pastry world. Ali presented, blackberry, cherry vanilla, raspberry, chai vanilla, and earl grey flavors last night at a local fundraiser event looking to raise money to bring a movie theater back to our little hamlet. Restaurants in the area all came to present their best dish based on a movie theme. Pickwick Baking Co. chose Alice in Wonderland and put on a tea party to die for!

From what I hear, once the awards were dished out, Pickwick swept up most of them. I am so proud of this amazingly talented friend of mine. She is wise beyond her years and is insanely fun to be around. Between her talent and her charm, she’s the kind of company you long to keep. Okay, I’ll show you the pictures now, but try not to drool on your computer.
