I always love it when my baker friend Ali sends me an urgent text wondering if I am home so she can drop off something delicious to photograph. Last Friday 3 flats of currants fell into her lap and she madly started working with them at the restaurant. She’s the new Pastry Chef at a popular place here in town and she’s always looking to create something new and delicious. Now I am told the white/clear ones are called Gooseberries but having looked it up, I am pretty sure I am correct in calling the picture in the middle here, a lovely image of white currants.

Of course I had to do something with my two little boxes of gems. I tossed the red ones into a scone recipe I have that I usually reserve for dried fruit. Because they are naturally sour and bitter, I knew they needed something to help balance that out. While I normally don’t frost my scones, I made a quick vanilla glaze and drizzled that over the top. And yeah, crazy good. They didn’t last a minute at my house.

{recipe below}

SCONE RECIPE

Serves 12

Prep time 10 minutes

Total time : 25 Minutes + cooling

2 Cups of all purpose flour – spooned and leveled

2 t baking powder

¼ teaspoon baking soda

¼ teaspoon salt

3 tablespoons sugar

½ cup cold unsalted butter cut into small pieces

¾ cup currant dried currants

½ cup low fat buttermilk

1 large egg

t tablespoon milk

Preheat oven to 425. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Ina bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and 2 T sugar

With pastry blender, two knives, or a pastry cutter, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse meal. Stir in currants. Make a well in center – add buttermilk and egg and stir just until combined. Do not over mix.

Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface; knead 5 or 6 times. Pat into an 8” disk. Cut with floured cooking cutter or shape into rectangle – cut in half lengthwise then cut into squares. Cut each square into a triangle.

Brush with milk and sprinkle with sugar. Bake until golden brown 12-15 minutes – cool on wire rack.

{This was given to me by my sister-in-law and I don’t have the source.}

GLAZE

The glaze is confectioners sugar mixed with a little milk, vanilla, and a few drops of lemon juice until it is the right thickness.

It is always fun when Sarah from Lil’ Hoot Parties calls and asks if I swing by with my camera. Sarah is an event stylist and always does a bang-up job. This was for her niece’s first birthday and was planned to be an outdoor romp with kids running everywhere having a ball of summer fun. As they were setting up though, a few drops of rain decided to join the party. Not that that could dampen the mood with all this gorgeousness around.

And what a thrill to have Amy Atlas Events feature the images on her blog. Click over there to see all the vendor credits from this amazing party.

All the goodies taking cover from the warm summer rain…..

It really is just what this town needed. A brand new bakery fresh out of the oven. Captn’s Bakery on Washington Street is a breath of fresh air when it comes to where to grab sunday morning goodies or an afternoon snack. The croissants are out of this world and the breads are as delicious as they are beautiful. What I didn’t expect to find here was a quick little lunch option. They’ve got a few different savory croissants that are a great grab-n-go option for busy people or starving kids. If you haven’t enjoyed something from Captn’s yet, head down there as soon as you can! {the soup below is not currently offered at Captn’s – I brought home some Spinach/Cheese and Ham/Cheese croissants for lunch and served some cold Gaspacho with them on my back deck.}

What a pleasure to photograph the Merry Mixers annual auction this year. Throughout each of the past 62 years, the Merry Mixers committee has raised money to support MassGeneral for Children @ North Shore Medical Center. The grand finale is the auction and raffle held at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead, MA.

This year the event was graced with good weather, great people, and a generous spirit.

Thank you to the wonderful committee for putting on such a great night and to all the sponsors who made the night possible.

If you know me personally, you’ve been hearing me blather on about this cool photography workshop I would be attending in May. Last November I got totally lucky to get a spot in a 12 person food photography workshop with Clare Barboza and Helene Dujardin. Both amazing photographers whose work makes me drool!

Then, at the end of March I broke my foot and instantly feared I might not be able to attend the workshop. A huge thank you goes out to my family who nursed me back to health and allowed me full control of the TV remote while I kept my foot up and overdosed on calcium and vitamin D.

The workshop has been way more than I ever expected. Alongside incredible instruction from Clare and Helene, I am also surrounded by wonderful women who share the same passion for photography. Quite a treat, let me tell you. Talking photog shop all day long with people who never tire of it….HEAVEN!

So far we have had five shoots with another planned for today. We’ve made breakfast and shot it. We went to a Charleston farmer’s market and shot there. And last night we got to eat at Helene’s favorite Charleston restaurant, Lana. And wow! That was awesome!!!

Here is a little bit of what I’ve done…
